Big game in the WS last night, and their big front page article today is titled “ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ” I guess they don’t feel much like sticking to sports. Or even writing anything at all.

It’s a protest, right? Looks like they’re still on about it. Shame what happened to their editor guy. A few of them are still writing about sports, but I lost the energy to follow any sport properly years ago.
While I think it’s a worthy cause to say something about most protests are almost depressingly ineffective, so I’m just wondering what’s going to happen next.

I enjoy some sports, but really don’t follow any of them closely. I, and many others, apparently, enjoyed Deadspin precisely because it wasn’t just a rehash of sports scores. It will be interesting to see how long the protest goes on. Will G/O just kill Deadspin like they did with Splinter? With the can everybody and hire new people? Who would want that gig, knowing what management is like? It’ll be interesting to see how this ends.

Interesting. I wonder if they did it out of solidarity or because the spat made them look bad. I’m guessing the latter, since their annoying ads were what helped trigger this mess.

That’s one of the secrets of this and other industries . Businesses know that no matter how bad the morale is on the current team, unless you’re actively engaging in egregious criminal behaviour that directly shafts your team members and everyone knows, you can still get people to work for you for a pittance.
If everyone doesn’t know, if the criminal behaviour isn’t severe enough, if it’s not completely screwing over the staff, the name Deadspin alone should be effective enough for applicants who can at least talk without drooling and type without shitting themselves, which is all they need for clickbait revenue.

In my neck of the woods, it’s also easier to be an activist when you’re 71 and out of work and have nothing else to do but 30 more years to live.
They have to be taught how to use social media, though.

Same, along with the picture of the basketball so you could tell it was sports related.
The lack of other content is telling, and it's likely that the funbag wasn't posted on Tuesday (as it usually is) out of solidarity. But aside from the final email, it's still the same funbag.

Farmers is trash and they deserve it, though.
Their legal galax y brains (representing their 21st Century subsidiary ) actually tried to use a photo of me in a Cayman frunk taken before their insured driver hit me as proof that I wasn’t hurt. I think it was even pulled off of OppositeLock! They doubled down on that bullcrap not knowing EXIF data is a thing, and I had to tell the judge when we ultimately ended up in court that it wasn’t fair to use . It got thrown out quick, but I can’t imagine having internet access and not realizing that photos often get posted after the fact, out of order, or simply for effect.
Here’s a photo from 2013 in case they’re listening. You suck as human beings, you suck at research and you especially suck at ad buys, Farmers.

The only sport I really truly follow is hockey, and they barely cover it. Lauren Thiesen writes good stuff about it, but not too often. occasionally Petchesky would phone in an article (saying that is what got me perma-greyed on DS.)
I don’t know why sports media- especially ESPN- is trying so hard to force us to care about soccer.

“ I’ve never been madder about a media story than about what’s being done to Deadspin. Lump in my throat and too furious to sleep , just thinking about this absolute garbage. Cannot even imagine how it’s making you all feel. I can’t muster up the good-after-bad energy required to scream at your bosses from across the void, but I felt like it would be worthwhile to copy your entire masthead just to say thanks. You are one of the very best collections of writers, artists and thinkers that we have anywhere today. I know I’m not the only one who will continue to try finding a way to your work through whatever inane and dehumanizing obstacles that your purported superiors keep dumping in the middle of our path to each other. What you have created is valued and valuable, rare and special, and I hope you are all as proud of what you’ve built and the fight you’ve been fighting as your readers are of you. You have my deepest admiration and my strongest appreciation for everything you have accomplished to make Deadspin what it is. Simply put: thank you all for making my favorite website”

ESPN, more than anybody else, just follows the money. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and has rapidly grown in popularity in the U.S. over the last 30 years, especially as more kids have grown up playing it. It’s not some sort of nefarious conspiracy.
I don’t follow hockey or baseball or lacrosse or horse racing or track and field or rugby or cricket or swimming or gymnastics but I don’t think anybody is trying to “force me to care about it” when a sports website publishes an article about them . What a bizarre accusation.
DipodomysDeserti

Soccer is a lot more popular than hockey, so it makes sense they’d cover it more. They aren’t trying to get people in Michigan to like soccer, they’re trying to get all the soccer fans to tune into their show.

The linked article suggests that G/Os ad team implemented auto play because they weren’t meeting the promised # of views.
Which kind of implies to me that G/O made a bullshit promise to Farmers that they couldn’t deliver on - if true, I wouldn’t blame Farmers for that.

The entire deal—how it was agreed to, proposed, implemented and ultimately pulled—is the absolute best example of “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” I can think of from start to finish. Just a series of very, very stupid decisions that everyone knows not to do in 2019.
